A mixed methods study of female higher education fundraisers' experiences with sexual harassment by male donors
Abstract: Donor sexual harassment of fundraisers has a significant impact on nonprofit organizations. Comprised of two studies, this paper examines how female fundraisers at U.S.-based public R1 research universities experience and recognize sexual harassment by male donors. Encompassing 24 in-depth interviews, Study 1 aims to answer the question, "How is sexual harassment by male donors experienced by female fundraisers through the course of their work?" A thematic content analysis is used to interpret the collected data. Based on Study 1 findings, Study 2 utilizes a questionnaire to examine views on sexual harassment in relation to fundraiser age, time in the field, and income. ANOVA tests are used to analyze the data from 553 respondents. Outcomes to emerge include issues in defining, recognizing, and excusing sexual harassment; the adoption of personal rules to avoid difficult situations; organizational disregard for fundraiser experiences; and gender norms that influence fundraiser presence and personal blame.
