Sustainable in-line measurement of partition coefficients for tracers by integrating microfluidic mixing chip and functionalized glass fiber

Oil field tracers play a crucial role in assessing and understanding production data, pressure tests, inter-well connections, remaining oil saturation, and enhanced oil recovery processes. A key feature of the tracers is the partition coefficient, which signifies the ratio of tracer concentrations in oil and water phases at equilibrium. Measuring the partition coefficient is crucial for the development of both partitioning and non-partitioning tracers. However, the conventional shake-flask measurement technique requires significant quantities of organic solvents and lengthy measurement durations. To address these challenges, we introduced an innovative solution known as the in-line partition coefficient measurement system for oil field tracers. To reduce the sample size, solvent usage, measurement time, and expenses, we harnessed microfluidic technology to downscale the partition coefficient measurement process. This approach involves employing in-line optical measurements, tracer solutions of varying concentrations in water to establish reference curves. The surface functionalization of glass fiber-based oil-water separation allows for the measurement of partition coefficients using crude oil. This advancement enhances conventional partition coefficient measurements for various oil field tracers, introducing sustainability benefits. Remarkably, this microfluidic technology not only reduces costs and human involvement but also enhances sample analysis throughput.
