Musculoskeletal pain among Dental Surgeons of Nalbari and Barpeta District of Assam: A Cross Sectional Study

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are a significant occupational health concern for dental surgeons due to repetitive motions, static postures, and prolonged awkward positions. These conditions, characterized by pain and functional limitations in joints, muscles, and tendons, necessitate improved ergonomic practices to enhance long-term well-being. This study involved 32 dental surgeons from Nalbari and Barpeta districts who voluntarily participated. Data were collected using structured questionnaires assessing demographic details, ergonomic factors, MSD prevalence, and workplace conditions. Ethical consent was obtained, and participants completed the questionnaires based on their experiences. The prevalence of MSDs was 56.25%, with the lower back (26.08%) and neck being the most affected areas. Working posture varied, with 35.48% preferring sitting and 64% exhibiting a curved spine during practice. Vibrating tool use was linked to pain in 6.25% of participants. Workplace noise was a concern for 90.62% and only 28.12% engaged in regular physical activity, though 62.5% performed post-practice stretching. Dental surgeons face a high risk of MSDs, particularly in the lumbar region, driven by biomechanical and environmental factors. The study underscores the need for multifaceted prevention strategies, including ergonomic optimization, regular breaks, and physical exercise, to mitigate MSD risks and improve occupational health. Keywords: Musculoskeletal disorders, dental surgeons, ergonomics, occupational health, lower back pain, workplace environment.
