Machine Learning Based Weed Detection in Zucchini farm
Zucchini cultivation in India faces a significant challenge from weeds, which compete for essential nutrients, thereby reducing crop yield. Despite the widespread use of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) in weed detection, research specific to zucchini fields remains scarce. This study addresses this gap by evaluating the effectiveness of various ML algorithms—such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), Region-based Convolutional Neural Networks (RCNN), and the latest iteration of You Only Look Once (YOLOv9)—in accurately identifying weeds in zucchini crops. Our aim is to streamline weed management practices in zucchini farming, which are currently labourintensive and time-consuming. Our methodology involves training and testing these ML algorithms on zucchini field data to assess their accuracy and efficiency in weed detection. Results indicate that YOLOv9 surpasses other algorithms, demonstrating superior accuracy and efficiency in identifying weeds among zucchini plants. Specifically, YOLOv9 achieved an impressive accuracy of $98.213 \%$, outperforming ANN ($92.08 \%$), SVM ($95.1 \%$), and RCNN (97.06%). This research emphasises the importance of tailored approaches to weed detection in specific agricultural contexts. The findings suggest that implementing YOLOv9 could revolutionise weed management in zucchini cultivation, potentially reducing labour costs and increasing productivity. This study highlights the potential for advanced ML algorithms to enhance precision agriculture practices and improve crop yield. By leveraging cutting-edge technology like YOLOv9, farmers can make more informed decisions and optimise resource allocation in their fields. By integrating these tools into their farming operations, farmers can achieve higher levels of efficiency and profitability.
