Internalization of Clinical Engineering Service: the strategy of ASST Spedali Civili di Brescia
This research examines the decision made by A.S.S.T. Spedali Civili di Brescia to internalize its Clinical Engineering (CE) service, moving from an outsourced model. The shift was prompted by growing technological complexity, financial pressures, and the end of a long-standing service contract with a Global Service. According to the American College of Clinical Engineering, clinical engineers are professionals who advance patient care by applying engineering and managerial skills to healthcare technology [1]. Internalization is expected to improve autonomy, reduce long-term costs, and integrate CE with hospital IT systems. Regaining in-house expertise allows customized maintenance strategies, enhancing the performance of critical devices. Challenges include staff training, compliance, and cybersecurity. A phased implementation plan and an efficiency model were adopted to manage the transition and assess outcomes [2].
