Addressing Current Unmet Clinical Needs by Co-Designing a Novel Web Interface for Decision Support in Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes

Management of type 1 diabetes (T1D) in pediatric patients requires a comprehensive approach that integrates complex datasets and addresses developmental and psychological factors. In this context, clinicians often face significant time constraints during routine visits, making it challenging to analyze data effectively and optimize treatment plans. To address these challenges, we present the co-design process for the web interface of a novel clinical decision support system, named TWIN, developed within the DARE (DigitAl lifelong pREvention) initiative. Collaborating with clinicians from the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital in Rome, we conducted co-design sessions based on health design thinking techniques to understand real-world needs and workflows during routine visits, allowing iterative prototyping of the TWIN clinical web interface. The resulting interface design incorporates interactive tools to align with clinicians’ requirements, ensuring efficient and informed decision-making during consultations. Future work will refine the web interface and validate it in a clinical trial.
