EmoCounsel: Emotion Based Counselling System

Human conduct and wellbeing are greatly influenced by emotions, yet it can be difficult to express them in writing when non-verbal cues are absent. The EmoCounsel System addresses this by utilizing Natural Language Processing (NLP) to interpret and understand messages sent by students, as well as Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) networks, a type of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, to detect emotions and analyze sentiment in student messages. The system identifies emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and disgust through text processing, providing valuable insights to counsellors. Counsellors can evaluate students' emotional states and prioritize urgent cases with the use of these insights, which are displayed in charts. Given the rise in student stress and mental health issues combined with anxiety in meeting counsellors face-to-face, EmoCounsel provides prompt support and early identification, particularly in places like Malaysia where stigma around mental health and a lack of affordable services are obstacles. By offering unbiased emotional data, the system not only improves decision-making and efficient support but also lessens counsellor bias. This enhances the general infrastructure of mental health and creates a healthier emotional environment for students to express their concerns.
