Towards a Smart and Safe Campus with COVID-19 Detection Automation System

Automation has played an essential role in protecting people from becoming infected with diseases such as COVID-19. Effectively employing technology in the fight against coronavirus and other viruses is vital, especially in educational environments such as university campuses. Multiple studies have recommended automating manual processes, such as measuring people’s temperatures, and this idea became essential with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Measuring individuals’ temperatures is an efficient method of detecting infection, as a temperature of 38 degrees or higher could indicate illness. However, preventing these individuals from entering the campus may lead to issues such as being considered absent. This project was completed over six months, creating a thermometer and sensor that are more cost-effective than current alternatives and feature enhanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities. Its purpose is to monitor temperatures while simultaneously managing attendance records. The rationale for this project is to ensure that university employees feel comfortable and safe in their working environment. The project aims to reduce human exposure to infection while protecting the rights of potentially infected students by not considering them absent. This ensures a safe campus environment that enhances the quality of life for both staff and students.
