Designing of Differential Dual Delay Cell-Based Ring VCO Using 45nm CMOS Technology

The Ring voltage-controlled oscillators (R-VCOs) are important to modern communication systems, especially for PLLs, cognitive Radio systems, and ultra-wideband UWB applications. A differential R-VCO architecture is presented in 45 nm CMOS technology and simulated here. The desired frequency range, 2.325 MHz to 8.829 MHz, was obtained with as low a phase noise as -89.33 $\mathrm{dBc} / \mathrm{Hz}$ at offset frequency of 1 MHz It works seamlessly over supply voltages of $0.7 \mathrm{~V}, 0.8 \mathrm{~V}$, and 0.9 V, varying control voltages from 0 V to -0.7 V. The designed circuit consumes power that varies between 1.263 mW and 2.178 mW over the operating ranges. Incorporating a dual-delay-path configuration and active inductors in its design provides much better frequency robustness, noise cancelation, and energy efficiency of the circuit, ensuring it is particularly suitable for upcoming communication systems.
