Data Security in Smart Grid Using Cryptographic Algorithms

Cyber Security plays a vital role in protecting Smart Grids. Smart grids that implement advanced communication networks and IoT devices and automation become exposed to cyberattacks involving malware intrusions as well as data breaches and denial-of-service attacks. Creating a solid data security approach becomes essential for protecting against unauthorized users in smart grids. Through encryption with Caesar Cipher and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) data transmissions become secure for communication purposes. Users must verify their passwords according to stored credentials to gain access and authentication fails when passwords do not match in both encryption approaches. The Caesar Cipher maintains lightweight security despite its basic status, yet AES operates with high security using its advanced symmetric encryption capabilities against brute-force attacks. Addition of these cryptographic methods strengthens smart grid security because they protect both data integrity and confidentiality. In these papers the performance of Caesar Cipher and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is analyzed.
