Selection of the design profile of directional wells to assess the risk of intersection with previously drilled wells

Introduction. The study of directional drilling for exploration wells in the Caspian Sea, in particular in Turkmenistan, is an integral part of strategic energy planning. This research has critical importance, given the constant changes in the energy industry and the need to maintain sustainable energy supplies. The development of innovative technologies and the optimization of drilling processes contribute not only to improving hydrocarbon production efficiency, but also to reducing negative environmental impact. Purpose of the research. The aim of the study is to improve the methods of directional drilling of exploration wells in the Caspian Sea in Turkmenistan. This will increase the efficiency of work and reduce the negative impact on the environment. Materials and methods. There are several methods for designing the borehole profile: the minimum curvature method, the tangential method, the balanced tangential method, the average angle method, and the radius of curvature method. Modern deep-sea equipment allows you to track the drilling trajectory in real time. This monitoring, as well as consideration of qualitative and quantitative criteria for assessing the profile trajectory, helps to identify minimal deviations from the parameters of the design profile and determine suitable drilling conditions. The Close Approach program completely eliminates the risk of new wells intersecting with previously drilled wells. Results and discussion. In difficult drilling conditions, this study helped us to accurately assess and select the best trajectory for drilling. We assessed the risk of intersection of the new borehole with the previously drilled ones and evaluated the profile compiled using the CloseApproach program. This program provides more accurate estimates and a better understanding of drilling conditions. The study collected data on the trajectories of previously drilled wells, forming the basis for assessing and predicting the effectiveness of avoiding crossing with these wells. Conclusion. A crucial finding of the research is not only the significance of analyzing the characteristics of previously drilled wells, but also the prospects for future directional wells in existing fields. This strategy enhances the effectiveness of field development and facilitates well-informed investment decisions.
