VZootechnics of laboratory Javan macaques (Macaca fascicularis)

To ensure the comfortable maintenance of laboratory Javanese macaques (Macaca fascicularis), which play an important role in preclinical research, it is necessary to pay attention to several key aspects. It is important to ensure suitable accommodation for this type of animal, to establish and control the optimal parameters of the microclimate of the places of detention, to make a balanced diet for the necessary nutrients, to select and provide various types of enrichment environments, as well as to take into account the peculiarities of the reproductive system for successful reproduction of animals and obtaining healthy offspring. The search for publications was performed in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases. The review included publications available for search on 07/09/2024. As a result of this review, the literature data on laboratory Javanese macaques have been identified and summarized, which describe: conditions of animal placement; acceptable parameters of the microclimate in places of detention (temperature, humidity, air exchange rate, illumination and lighting cycle); provision of various types of environmental enrichment; characteristic behavior of macaques in the population; features of the reproductive system of males and females; sexual behavior of animals during the cage, including the optimal period for their mating; the period of pregnancy and childbirth; features of macaques in the care of offspring. When analyzing the literature data, the main recommendations for the maintenance of Javanese macaques were collected, taking into account all zootechnical needs for their placement and reproduction.
