The Novel NP Angle—The Ultimate Panacea for Evaluating the Sagittal Skeletal Dysplasia in Orthodontics: A Retrospective Study
IntroductIonJaw relationship evaluation in the sagittal direction is among the most crucial aspects of the diagnosis and treatment planning process for skeletal malocclusions. In essence, cephalometric analysis establishes this association. In the past, a variety of linear and angular measurements have been added to cephalometrics to aid doctors in diagnosing skeletal jaw disparity. 1 In 1948, Downs was the first to use cephalometric measurement of the angle created by AB and NPog to assess the anteroposterior (AP) apical base connection. 2 Using positive and negative symbols, the mandible's relative protraction or retrusion was indicated.A few years later, Riedel described the apical base relationship using the difference, ANB, between SNA and SNB measurements. This became known as the ANB angle. 3,4s the primary technique for assessing AP jaw connections, this has gained widespread acceptance.Nevertheless, Wits appraisal, 5 Beta angle, 6 YEN angle, 7 W angle, 8 Pi analysis, 9 SAR angle, 10 DW plane analysis, 11 and, more recently, Tau () angle 12 are commonly used parameters for diagnosing skeletal jaw discrepancy. However, many of the previously used cephalometric parameters were unstable, extremely variable, difficult to locate and replicate, and influenced by jaw rotation caused by orthodontic treatment and growth.Additionally, they were affected by variations in cranial base length, dependent on alveolar bone remodeling 1,
