The Baltic States and the war on Ukraine: A unified front against Russian Aggression

The Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, motivated by their past experiences of Soviet domination and concerns about Russian expansionism, have been outspoken and active in their support of Ukraine during Russia's invasion. They have a strong awareness of the threats to regional security and the necessity of defending democratic norms, as seen by their united opposition to Russian aggression. The Baltic nations have pushed for stronger European Union (EU) and NATO sanctions on Russia since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, in addition to offering military and humanitarian assistance to that country. They have boosted defence budgets and demanded a more prominent NATO presence along their eastern borders in recognition of their role as NATO's frontline states. With such a background, this article explores the multifaceted roles of the Baltic States in the Ukraine conflict, examining their political, military, and humanitarian responses and analysing the broader implications for European and transatlantic security.
