Broadband Matching of a Three-Layer Composite Medium With a Grid of Metal Strips

The research of the electrical parameters of a three-layer fairing with a mesh of metal strips, which serves as a heating element of the ice protection system is presented. As a model of the metal strips, its representation in the form of a grid of metal strips is taken. The analysis of the electrical parameters was performed using of transfer matrices technique for the frequency range of <tex>$5-9 \text{GHz}$</tex> and incidence angles of <tex>$0-90$</tex> degrees for one polarization. E-field vector is directed perpendicular to the strips of the metal grid. The elements of the transfer matrix method were found from the boundary conditions at the interfaces of the layers. The boundary conditions of the metal grid were calculated from the impedance conditions of M.A. Leontovich averaged boundary condition. It is shown that the accuracy of the analytical formulas for the reflection and transmission coefficients of the grid of metal strips corresponds to the accuracy of impedance calculation. The thicknesses and permittivity of the layers are calculated to ensure broadband matching in the operating frequency range. The results of analytical calculations are compared with the results of numerical simulation of the considered composite structure in the Floquet unit cell. The presented graphs showed good agreement between the results of numerical simulation and the results of analytical calculations.
