Longitudinal Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus Screening Protocol and Risk Factor Analysis for Nosocomial Transmission Control in Equine Hospitals
Abstract Background: MRSA poses a significant threat in equine hospitals, necessitating robust infection control. Aims and Objectives: To assess MRSA colonisation dynamics and nosocomial transmission in hospitalised horses using a systematic screening protocol. Materials and Methods: 2283 horses were sampled at admission, weekly, and at discharge. Incidence rates and risk factors (like antibiotic use) were analysed using logistic regression. Results: MRSA was detected in 5.3% of horses. Community-associated and nosocomial rates were 27 and 23 per 1000 admissions, respectively. Antibiotic use (ceftiofur, aminoglycosides) was a significant predictor of nosocomial MRSA (AORs: 4.2 and 3.1). Conclusion: Structured MRSA screening enhances early detection. Antibiotic stewardship and environmental control can reduce transmission in equine hospitals.
