AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE ON HEPATIC STEATOSIS: A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO THE MANAGEMENT OF FATTY LIVER DISEASE

Fatty liver disease, particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), has emerged as a major public health concern globally, largely attributed to sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary habits, and rising metabolic disorders. Modern medicine currently offers limited pharmacological interventions, relying heavily on lifestyle modifications for disease management. Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine, presents a holistic and individualized approach to the treatment of fatty liver disease by addressing its root causes through the correction of metabolic imbalance, detoxification, and rejuvenation of liver function. This article explores the Ayurvedic understanding of fatty liver disease within the framework of Yakrit Roga, Medoroga, and Ama Janya Vyadhi, correlating it with the pathophysiology of hepatic steatosis described in contemporary medicine. A range of Ayurvedic herbs and formulations—including Bhumi Amla, Katuki, Punarnava, Triphala, and Arogyavardhini Vati are discussed for their hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and lipid-lowering properties. The role of detoxification therapies such as Virechana and Basti, along with dietary and lifestyle modifications, is also emphasized. The paper highlights the therapeutic potential of Ayurvedic interventions and advocates for integrative research to validate and optimize traditional treatment strategies for managing fatty liver disease.
