Temel Psikolojik İhtiyaçların Giderilmesinin ve Engellenmesinin Öz-Kontrol Üzerindeki Etkisinin İncelenmesi: Benlik Saygısının Aracılık Rolü
The present study aimed to investigate the predictive effect of the satisfaction and frustration of basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) on individuals' self-control levels, and to examine the mediating role of self-esteem in this relationship. Employing a correlational research design, data were collected from 436 participants aged between 18 and 65 residing in Istanbul. The data collection instruments included the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale, the Brief Self-Control Scale, and the Self-Esteem Rating Scale - Short Form. Data obtained from the scales utilized in the study were analyzed through the IBM SPSS software, while mediation analysis was performed employing the PROCESS macro developed for SPSS by Hayes (2012). The findings revealed that self-esteem plays a full mediating role in the relationship between the satisfaction of basic psychological needs and self-control. Furthermore, self-esteem was found to partially mediate the relationship between the frustration of basic psychological needs and self-control. These results emphasize the central role of self-esteem as a psychological mechanism linking need-based experiences to self-regulatory capacity. Key Words: Basic Psychological Needs, Self-Esteem, Self-Control
