Fulminant Streptococcus dysgalactiae Endocarditis in a Healthy Pediatric Patient
Streptococcus dysgalactiae (SD) is normally found in the pharynx, skin, and urinary tract of humans as a part of normal human flora. SD-caused infective endocarditis (IE) is commonly described in elderly individuals with preexisting underlying diseases. SD-caused IE is rare in previously healthy pediatric patients. We report an exceedingly rare case of a pediatric patient who developed multivalvular fulminant IE secondary to SD bacteremia. This case reiterates the importance of echocardiography in the initial diagnosis as well as subsequent surveillance of IE and highlights the dilemmas in management strategies in the setting of severe fulminant IE with destructive vegetations.
