Key aspects of the design and maintenance of hazardous material remediation bunds

<ns3:p>Industrial activities are constantly expanding due to accelerated economic and technological competition, making it necessary to expand existing storage capacities and create new ones. The storage of hazardous liquids and substances is a subject of strict rules, which are laid down in international and national legislation and standards. Changing environmental factors have made it necessary to review these regulations and guidelines. This article presents the results of research on the remediation bunds of tanks for the storage of hazardous liquids. Therefore, the authors analysed the legal and technical requirements and identified provisions requiring revision. Based on this, a method will be developed for sizing remediation bunds that is equitable from the point of view of the authorities and the operator, and which can be applied in practice. In addition, the design and maintenance principles, that should be applied to ensure the construction and operation of a bund for safely containing spillage will be systematised.</ns3:p>
