A Study on the Experience of Participating in ‘Bicycle Activities’ to Alleviate Smartphone Addiction among Adolescents

This study, supported by the Korea Cycle Racing Association and conducted by the psychological counseling center “Maeumssi,” aimed to explore the lived experiences and perceived meanings of adolescents in Gwangmyeong City who participated in a bicycle activity program designed to alleviate smartphone overdependence. Employing Giorgi’s phenomenological qualitative research method, the study involved in-depth interviews with 14 adolescents aged between 12 and 17, conducted from November 9 to December 31, 2024. The research sought to uncover the subjective meanings embedded in their participation in the program. The analysis yielded 29 meaning units, which were further categorized into 11 subthemes and 4 essential themes: “Ordinary but repetitive daily life,” “Joy of togetherness,” “Refreshing freedom through the wind,” and “Focus through choice.” These findings highlight the importance of structured, shared activities and diverse leisure opportunities as practical approaches to reducing smartphone overuse among adolescents. The study offers implications for educational and social service interventions aimed at promoting healthier digital habits and supporting youth well-being.
