Range of motion exercises' efficacy in reducing blood pressure and cholesterol in gout patients

Context: Physical activity has the potential to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels, but its effectiveness in gout patients has not been widely studied. Aims: To assess the effectiveness of range of motion (ROM) exercises work in lowering gout patients' blood pressure and cholesterol. Methods: This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group, pre- and post-test approach. The sample was 20 gout patients who were not undergoing treatment with uric acid-lowering drugs for the past two weeks. The sample received an eight-week ROM physical activity intervention. Serum uric acid, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure were measured before and after the intervention using AutoCheck 3in1 and a sphygmomanometer. Data were analyzed using the paired t-test to assess significant changes and differences before and after the intervention. Results: Significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure after being given ROM physical activity for eight consecutive weeks was observed. By week VIII, the systolic and diastolic blood pressures were significantly reduced (p<0.001 for both). In addition, total cholesterol levels were significantly reduced by Week VIII (p<0.001). Conclusions: This study demonstrates that ROM exercises are an effective, low-intensity intervention for reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels in patients with gout. This form of exercise can be particularly beneficial for individuals with limited physical capacity, offering a safe and accessible option for managing cardiovascular risk factors associated with gout. Future research should explore long-term effects and potential mechanisms underlying these improvements.
