THE 25TH CHAPAYEV DIVISION MEMORIAL HOUSE-MUSEUM IN KRASNY YAR VILLAGE: PRESERVING HISTORICAL MEMORY
This study, based on field materials collected in Krasny Yar village (including an interview with the Head of the 25th Chapayev Division Memorial House-Museum, G.P. Sukhareva), presents a compelling example of systematic efforts to preserve the memory of prominent historical figures and events in the Republic of Bashkortostan. The article examines strategies for preserving and revitalizing historical memory of the Civil War in the Southern Urals, focusing on the roles of V.I. Chapayev and M.V. Frunze through the lens of the 25th Chapayev Division Memorial House-Museum (Krasny Yar, Ufimsky District). It analyzes the museum’s unique local character, rooted in an authentic site of memory (the division’s 1919 headquarters), and its multifaceted activities (exhibitions, educational events, memorial practices, digitization). The research aims to identify how meanings are constructed (heroism, the tragedy of fratricidal conflict, patriotic education) within the memorialization of this complex historical period. The study concludes that the museum serves as a key agent in shaping regional identity, combining the heroization of the "Red" defenders with an awareness of the Civil War’s tragedy and active youth patriotic education.
