Strategic Reconstruction under the Mismatch of Business Model and Profit Model: A Case Study of Starbucks
Faced with intense competition in the global coffee chain industry, enterprises are placing greater emphasis on innovation and strategic differentiation to capture market share. In this context, Starbucks has established a competitive business model by embracing the third space concept, developing a high-value-added product structure, and implementing a global-localization synergy strategy. Despite its significant brand value and expansion capabilities, in recent years, against the backdrop of intensified market competition and increased management burdens, there has been a notable imbalance between its profit model and business model. Based on operating data from 2020 to 2024, this paper identifies the core issues faced by Starbucks, including a 15% decline in profit margin per store due to rapid store expansion, the impact of low-price brands on its high-end positioning, with the formers market share reaching 30%, and an imbalanced financial structure, with a current ratio of 0.8 and an inventory backlog of 200 million US dollars. In response to these problems, this paper analyzes Starbucks efforts to optimize its debt structure, build an intelligent inventory system to reduce costs by 15%, and implement differentiated store layouts and localized product innovations. At the same time, it suggests accelerating digital transformation, aiming for digital revenue to account for more than 35%, and promoting the transformation from a "coffee retailer" to a "lifestyle service platform" to enhance brand competitiveness and financial stability. The research indicates that the main challenge for Starbucks lies in the temporary imbalance between business expansion and profit resilience. Only through systematic strategic optimization can it achieve a dynamic balance between scale growth and efficiency improvement.
