Tandem Cylinder Noise Reduction Using Perforated Plates
The aerodynamic interaction between landing gear components is a significant source of airframe noise. This paper numerically demonstrates a highly effective passive strategy for mitigating noise from a tandem cylinder configuration, a canonical model for such interactions. Using high-fidelity lattice Boltzmann simulations at a Reynolds number of 1.66 × 105 , we show that an upstream perforated plate fundamentally alters the system’s aeroacoustic behaviour. The plate disrupts the inherent wake interaction, suppressing the primary vortex shedding frequency of the tandem system ( = 0.18) and imposing a new, lower-frequency mode at = 0.09. This reorganization of the flow field drastically reduces the unsteady aerodynamic forces on the cylinders and, critically, attenuates the dominant tonal noise source. A far-field noise reduction of up to 20 dB is achieved, validating the effectiveness of this approach. These findings provide critical physical insights and a quantitative basis for designing low-complexity fairings for quieter aircraft landing gear systems.
