Full-Scale Test Results of a Developmental Handling Qualities Rating Scale with a Certified Airline Flight Simulator and Multiple Pilots

This paper summarizes the test results of an alternative rating scale to the venerable Cooper-Harper Rating Scale (CHRS). Unlike the CHRS, the alternative rating scale has been designed to allow for ratings of all possible combinations of task performance and pilot compensation levels. This research project's objective is to provide flight test professionals with a new rating scale that provides more valid, reliable, and robust evaluations. This paper will summarize the flight simulator test results of the alternative rating scale system to the venerable CHRS. Such testing has been performed with a certified airline flight simulator using seven professional airline transport pilots. This paper describes the design of the alternative rating scale system. Then, this paper summarizes the test methods applied during landing approach handling qualities tasks using a certified airline flight simulator. Finally, the flight simulator test results and conclusions are discussed.
