Numerical Validation and Simulation of Velocity Slip and Temperature Jump in Hypersonic Non-Equilibrium Flow Using the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Method
Velocity slip and temperature jump on the wall surface are important features of hypersonic flow at low density. They affect aerodynamic force and heat transfer to the wall surface. Accurately simulating such flow with continuum computational fluid dynamics method requires the proper specification of boundary conditions on the wall surface. The correct quantification of velocity slip and temperature jump effects in numerical simulation can only be achieved by considering the kinetic nature of the gas, where the direct simulation Monte Carlo method is usually used. A recently developed direct simulation Monte Carlo code, Comet, is used to numerically study the velocity slip and temperature jump of hypersonic flow passing a flat plate surface. The first objective of this paper is to validate the Comet simulation results with existing experimental data. The second objective is to report the velocity slip and temperature jump of flat plate geometry at various Knudsen numbers and Mach numbers. It is anticipated that, the extensive simulation results presented in this paper can be used to develop new slip boundary condition model in computational fluid dynamics simulations.
