Evaluating Loci-Chem Solver Capabilities for Transonic and Supersonic Flows Over Bay Cavities
Cavity flows are prevalent in many fluids engineering applications. Relevant examples include combat aircraft that can be subject to high-speed cavity flows in their weapons bay or commercial aircraft that predominately encounter cavity flows during landing gear deployment and retraction. The strong acoustic effects of cavity flows are a major concern for stealth in military operations and noise control for commercial aircraft flying near airports. Being able to accurately model and control cavity flows will enable substantial improvements in aircraft design and performance. This paper aims at establishing a high- fidelity computational fluid dynamics framework based on wall-resolved LES, targeting the prediction of unsteady transonic and supersonic flows and pressure fluctuations developing over weapons bay cavities. The numerical results in terms of sound pressure level spectra and boundary layer quantities are validated using existing experimental data. The results shows that the numerical algorithm is able to accurately predict the SPL spectra in both transonic and supersonic conditions.
