Validation of the Wray-Agarwal Algebraic Transition Model in SU2

The Wray-Agarwal Algebraic Transition (WAAT) model has demonstrated excellent capability for external flow predictions in Ansys Fluent and OpenFoam. The WAAT model has been recently included by the authors in the Stanford’s open-source flow solver SU2. This paper summarizes the transition cases used to evaluate the WAAT model in Ansys Fluent, OpenFoam, and now SU2. Validation results in SU2 are presented for the T3A flat plate, NLF-0416 airfoil, 6:1 prolate spheroid, and the NASA Juncture Flow symmetric wing geometry (NACA airfoil distribution). A crossflow correction has also been implemented in the WAAT to demonstrate an improvement in predictions of crossflow dominated flows. The WAAT model has demonstrated great accuracy in SU2 for the traditional validation cases. The crossflow correction has also demonstrated a significant improvement in prediction capability for 3D transition flows.
