Talon-P: Comparison of Aerodynamics Analysis Frameworks with Wind Tunnel Experiments

This paper is a contribution to a special session focused on the analysis and optimization of a vehicle inspired by the Stratolaunch Talon-A vehicle, the baseline case of which we will refer to as Talon-P. This paper focuses on comparing aerodynamic analyses across high-fidelity simulation, low-mid-fidelity simulation, and experimental results. In addition, a cycle time study is performed, mapping the hours spent on specific activities to their respective analysis methods (low- to mid-fidelity, high-fidelity, and experimental). Coupling the simulation effort with timecard-style data is essential, as the cost per unit of time could eventually be determined. The paper also includes comparisons of aerodynamic results across all three data collection methods, when possible. Visualization methods include Tecplot, MATLAB plots using data along the vehicle's centerline, images from CFD tools, and imaging from experimental results. If the team finds little discrepancy between these methods, cost savings could be generated by reducing the demand for physical testing, an area which can incur significant cost and backlogs within the defense industry.
