The Role of Partnership Networks in Fostering Innovation and Technological Advancement in the Space Industry

The modern space industry is characterized by an intricate web of competitive rivalries and strategic partnerships. Major aerospace corporations, new commercial “NewSpace” entrants, national agencies, and other organizations simultaneously compete in overlapping markets while collaborating on missions and projects. To understand this evolving landscape, we analyze network data on inter-firm competition and partnership relationships across the global space sector. This analysis is based on a recent dataset encompassing 1,723 organizations and 4,760 partnership links, alongside 424 organizations and 1,636 competitive links, spanning domains from satellite communications and launch services to manufacturing and beyond. By treating firms as nodes in a network connected by either partnership ties or competitive ties we can apply graph analytics to identify key players, structural patterns, and emerging trends in how space industry actors interact.
