Flight and Wind Tunnel Measurements of Active Flow Control Effector Authority on the D90-v2 Jet
Measurements of active flow control effector control authority in flight tests were compared with wind tunnel measurements on the Dihedral-90 tailless high-sweep delta wing aircraft for validation of both sets of data. A 6 degree-of-freedom flight simulation model is updated with the static aerodynamic coefficients obtained from wind tunnel tests. The model is then used in conjunction with flight test data to estimate the dynamic coefficients in model. Active flow control is integrated into the model using wind tunnel measured control authority functions and validated against flight test data. Good agreement between the pitch and yaw control authority of Coanda-based trailing-edge circulation control effectors was found. A novel AFC control effector that uses a split Coanda valve approach is shown to produce either proverse yaw/roll control or adverse yaw/roll control, depending on how it is configured. The flight dynamics model is used to create a ±8 degree side slip maneuver, which is validated with flight test data.
