Experimental Characterization of Low Reynolds Number Wing Aerodynamics in Translation and Rotation
Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) are exploding in popularity in both military and urban environments as their size, affordability, and ease of use continue to foster new applications. A core research area for UAS is the capability of Vertical/Short Take-Off and Landing (V/STOL), often accomplished by a tilting propeller-wing system. In order to experimentally capture the aerodynamic forces occurring during the transition from vertical to horizontal flight, a hybrid reverse wind tunnel system (HRWTS) is employed to simulate the acceleration and rotation of a wing model from rest to a target Reynolds number. The system is shown to be accurate and precise in its movement. Additionally, aerodynamic force and moment data are characterized in cases including acceleration at set angle of attacks and varying pitching motions.
