Noise Prediction of NASA CRM-HL Using Lattice-Boltzmann Method and Wall-Modeled LES

This study compares two CFD approaches/solvers introduced to solve complex aeroacoustic problems, one being the Lattice Boltzmann Model based on Very Large Eddy Simulation (LBM-VLES) and the other the Wall-Modeled Large-Eddy Simulation (WM-LES). Both approaches solve turbulence based on LES using low-dissipative schemes and introduce wall models to capture turbulent boundary layers, while they solve completely different governing equations with different types of wall boundary conditions. By using these two approaches, we tackle the NASA High-Lift Common Research Model (CRM-HL) geometry, representative of an approach condition, for an 8% scale. The aerodynamic results show good agreement with sufficiently refined grids, particularly required on the flap surface. We also compare the far-field sound from the outboard side edge of the outboard flap using the permeable Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings technique, demonstrating good agreement in a mid-frequency range between the two approaches.
