Battery Technology in Aviation: Evaluating Industry Claims vs. Achievements

Batteries in aviation is a crucial technology for reducing global emissions, yet challenges remain in the developmental process and technological readiness that is needed in aviation. Claims about new battery advancements show a positive growth, but experiments prove significantly less than the claims. This paper investigates these claims made by scientists and engineers over the years and compares which achieved results. The method used in this research was as extensive literature review that includes papers, magazines, patents and company press releases. Key metrics that will be used include specific energy, life-cycle, cost, power density, nominal voltage, of the battery, and timeline. Results will show an understanding of the claims and the achievements from practical experiments and innovation. This understanding is beneficial for the industry to assess claims in a realistic manner, which could save the industry from investing in false claims. It would also guide other researchers in their battery selection process and give a more realistic outlook on future battery trends.
