Development of a Shallow-Water Icing Model in GlennICE: A Study on Water Film Runback
The Glenn Icing Computational Environment (GlennICE), developed by NASA Glenn Research Center, is a computational tool designed to simulate ice accretion on complex three-dimensional geometries. Traditionally reliant on the Messinger model for predicting ice shapes, GlennICE excels at simulating rime ice but faces challenges with more complex glaze ice formation due to the dynamic behavior of water films. To enhance its accuracy, the Shallow Water Icing Model (SWIM) has been integrated into GlennICE. SWIM employs the Shallow Water Equations (SWE) to offer a more precise depiction of water film dynamics, runback, and freezing. This PDE-based approach enables a comprehensive representation of mass and energy exchanges, allowing for improved simulations of transient ice accretion processes. Initial verification tests confirm SWIM's effectiveness, demonstrating accurate behavior in modeling dynamic water film flow under varying conditions.
