BGVLabs: An Interactive 3D Virtual Laboratory in Mechanical Engineering Training with User-Centered Feature Prioritization
Mechanical engineering education demands a shift towards more flexible teaching methodologies, especially in practical training. This study examines BGV Labs, an e-learning application that uses Blender and Unity to create a 3D virtual laboratory for Machine Shop course. A systematic literature review and an online survey identified six key features—scenario-based learning, tool handling emulation, variability, exploration, post-learning evaluation, and progress tracking—essential for improving learning outcomes. Survey results indicate that 70% of the respondents would primarily use the system if required. By integrating these insights, the paper aims to improve the virtual laboratory's educational impact and user experience, enhancing students' practical skills in mechanical engineering.
