Investigation of a PV-BESS Fed Islanded Microgrid System using RTDS Supported by Field Results
This paper gives a comparison study between real time data simulation (RTDS) results with the field results for an islanded microgrid (IMG) system. The islanded microgrid consists of photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) as inputs for the system. For the real time simulation of this IMG, a RTDS simulator is used where the IMG is programmed in RSCAD software. For field results, data is acquired manually as well as from a data monitoring system which is placed in an actual islanded field. Here, MPPT controlled boost converter operation is implemented for PV and BESS is connected to de link of the inverter through a bi-directional boost converter. A three-phase two-level inverter is used whose output is connected to distributed loads through a second order LCL filter. For investigation of this IMG, different modes of operation by switching on/off PV and BESS inputs are considered and the results are thoroughly analyzed in this paper. The comparison of RTDS and field results showcase effectiveness of the IMG control with $5.3 \%$ error in PV generated power and $2.7 \%$ error in BESS supplied power. A voltage boosting inverter is integrated with the system to improve the distribution line voltage magnitude.
