Hilbert-Huang Transform-Based Fault Detection and Classification in the Presence of Power Swings

This paper expands on a methodology predicated on the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) described by Li Zhenghua [1] for the classification and identification of incipient short-circuit faults in a power transmission network. The proposed approach analyzes the transient behavior of phase voltages and presents a practically superior alternative to conventional frequency decomposition techniques, particularly in complex scenarios characterized by the dynamic interplay of power swings originating from the source side. The robustness and discriminatory power of this method are evaluated through comprehensive simulations encompassing diverse fault modalities, including single line-to-ground (LG), line-to-line (LL) line-to-line-to-line (LLL), and line-to-line-to-line-to-ground (LLLG) faults implemented on the standard IEEE 9-bus system, demonstrating a high degree of accuracy in fault detection.
