Dynamic performance analysis of floating offshore wind turbines integrated with oscillating water columns matrix

• A novel rectangular barge platform is designed to reduce undesirable oscillations in Floating Offshore Wind Turbines. • An Oscillating Water Columns matrix is incorporated within the platform structure, enhancing stability through hydrodynamic interactions. • The adjustable Oscillating Water Columns matrix acts as an active controller, allowing tuning by switching between open and closed configurations to avoid resonance. • The platform’s response to various wave frequencies is assessed using the Response Amplitude Operator for dynamic performance evaluation. • A significant reduction in pitch motion is observed in the rectangular platform compared to a square barge, confirming enhanced overall efficiency through numerical simulations. Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWTs) are prone to undesirable wave-induced motions, which can impact their efficiency and structural integrity. This study proposes a novel rectangular barge platform that mitigates these oscillations by integrating Oscillating Water Columns (OWCs) matrix within the structure. While an active control strategy has not been implemented, the adjustable OWCs matrix introduces the potential for active tuning, allowing the platform to avoid natural frequencies by switching between open and closed configurations. The platform’s dynamic behavior is analyzed using the Response Amplitude Operator (RAO) to predict its response to various wave frequencies. Performance evaluations based on RAO analysis and numerical simulations confirm the effectiveness of the configurable OWCs matrix in reducing oscillations. The results demonstrate that the rectangular matrix platform significantly minimizes pitch motion across different wave conditions compared to a square barge, enhancing overall stability and efficiency.
