Geothermal Heating of Domestic Water: A New Generation of Geothermal Energy Units by Topology Optimization

Abstract Recovering the underground thermal energy from deep soil to the ground surface efficiently is a serious challenge in harvesting geothermal energy resources. In this article, advanced topology optimization mathematical modeling is developed and applied to seek an innovative technological design of a geothermal heat exchanger unit that can efficiently heat the domestic water during the winter seasons. New designs are obtained as a function of soil depth down to 30 m. Results are presented and discussed by comparing the performance of the geothermal unit to that of a classical U-tube unit for various Reynolds numbers. Enhanced efficiency is observed at Re = 2000 with more than 82% improvement in terms of the mass-flowrate averaged temperature difference between the inlet and outlet of the geothermal unit.
