Scientific and educational landscape of the Russian Arctic

The level of education of the population affects both the economic growth of the territory and all components of the dynamics of human resources: fertility, mortality, migration. The article examines the spatial patterns in the level of education of the population and the location of scientific and educational infrastructure in the Russian Arctic. By the analysis of the results of the 2021 population census, the author has identified the Arctic territories with the most and least educated populations at the regional and municipal levels. The European Arctic has a high proportion of the population with secondary vocational education, and Western Siberia – with tertiary education. The author has studied the distribution of the number of students and the publication output of scientific organizations across the territories of the Arctic zone. Three main scientific and educational centers of the Russian Arctic (Arkhangelsk, Murmansk and Apatity) account for 86 % of university students and 98 % of publication output. By the conducted analysis, the author has identified potential growth points for the knowledge economy in the Russian Arctic.
