Two Leaf-Mining Insects Newly Associated With Big Bluestem (Poaceae: Andropogon gerardi Vitman) (Diptera: Agromyzidae; Lepidoptera: Elachistidae)
We document the rearing of two leaf-mining insects from big bluestem (Poaceae: Andropogon gerardi Vitman) on Long Island, New York. Elachista angularis (Braun) (Lepidoptera: Elachistidae) has not been associated with any host plant before, nor has it been reported northeast of Maryland. Cerodontha dorsalis (Loew) (Diptera: Agromyzidae) is a grass generalist, but neither it nor any other agromyzid has been reported from big bluestem previously. We discuss the biology and phenology of both species at the study site. Both species were parasitized by various eulophid wasps. We also discuss the DNA barcode of E. angularis compared with other species in the E. saccharella group.
