From Leningrad to Bloomington: Fëdor Lavrov's Soviet Punk Legacy and the Ongoing Relevance of Dissent

English Abstract: Punk music arrived in the Soviet Union a decade after the style emerged in Western countries, retaining its characteristic elements—short durations, fast tempos, driving melodies, minimal instrumentation, and politically charged, anti-establishment lyrics delivered with vocal intensity. The genre embraced a do-it-yourself spirit with self-produced recordings. Begemotion Records, the Leningrad-based home studio of musician Fёdor Lavrov was responsible for producing many of the few surviving Soviet punk records released during the early 1980s. Lavrov recounted that his first album, Abort (1982), was recorded over two sessions in his bedroom, which served as the original studio for Begemotion Records. Following bans and threats from the KGB, Lavrov fled the country, eventually donating his smuggled recordings and related materials to the William and Gayle Cook Music Library at Indiana University. The enduring themes, influences, and style have sustained the relevance of his music, which is underscored by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, during which Lavrov remastered and rereleased a single, Военная Монархия ( Military Monarchy ), performed by his band Отдел Самоискоренения (Department of Self-Eradication) through his new label FLOOR IS LAVA in solidarity with Ukraine. This article explores the provenance, arrangement, and description of this collection, along with its processing in an institution that privileges circulating library resources in collaboration with a living, internationally displaced donor. The Lavrov collection exemplifies the enduring impact of art in not only capturing and framing the lived experiences of resistance during the Soviet era but also in offering critical insights and inspiration for contemporary struggles against authoritarianism today.
