Addressing Greenwashing Challenges: Analyzing Delta Air Lines' Compliance and Regulatory Fines
This study examines the legal challenges faced by Delta Air Lines regarding allegations of misleading claims about its carbon neutrality efforts. The airline pledged $1 billion to achieve zero emissions over the next decade, positioning itself as the world’s first carbon-neutral airline. However, concerns have been raised that its strategy relies heavily on questionable carbon offsets rather than emission reductions. The lawsuit against Delta accuses the airline of misrepresenting its sustainability efforts by depending on the voluntary carbon market instead of implementing tangible measures such as using sustainable fuels and actively reducing atmospheric carbon. The study employs an internal and external stakeholder analysis, utilizing the stakeholder power-interest matrix to assess the impact of greenwashing fines. Findings indicate that these allegations could significantly damage Delta’s credibility, diminishing trust among customers, investors, and the public. Additionally, regulatory scrutiny may result in stricter environmental compliance measures and financial penalties. The case highlights growing skepticism surrounding corporate environmental claims, reinforcing the need for transparency and accountability in sustainability disclosures. Delta must implement genuine carbon reduction strategies to restore trust and align its environmental commitments with measurable actions.
