Flowcytometric evaluation of cluster of differentiation 43 and cluster of differentiation 307a in diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia
Background and aim Flow cytometric immunophenotyping is extremely beneficial in the research of B-cell lymphoid malignancy. This approach aids in the detection and classification of B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia, lymphomas, and plasma cell diseases. The current study intended to assess the diagnostic significance of cluster of differentiation 43 (CD43) and CD307a in the diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Patients and methods A total of 33 patients with CLL in addition to 30 matched healthy persons were registered in this study. Both groups were subjected to an assessment of CD43 and CD307a. Results Majority of patients (63.6) was males with a mean age was 60.33±9.45 years. The most frequent presentations among the studied patients were recurrent infection (100%), fever (81.8%) and weight loss (81.8%). Progression occurred in only seven (21.2%) patients with disease free progression was 25 months. Only two patients died with overall survival was 36 months. It was found that the patient group had significantly higher CD43 (76.09±20.29 vs. 14.67±5.70 %; P <0.001) and CD307a (1.31±0.41 vs. 0.14±0.06 %; P <0.001) in comparison to the control group. Also, we found that CD43 at cutoff point greater than 20% had 94.3% overall accuracy in diagnosis of CLL with area under the curve was 0.95. Also, at cutoff point greater than 0.20%; CD307a had 95.8% overall accuracy in the diagnosis of CLL with area under the curve was 0.97. Conclusion Each of CD43 and CD307a had a significant role in the diagnosis of CLL.
