Willful Ignorance Among Iraqi Students Studying in Europe: An Analytical Study According to Gender and Academic Level Variables

Iraqi university students face numerous pressures and challenges, particularly those studying in Europe. These stressors can negatively affect their academic performance, as some students struggle to cope with academic situations effectively. In response, some students resort to maladaptive coping strategies, including, in some cases, willful ignorance. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researchers adopted the descriptive method. The current study aims to explore the phenomenon of willful ignorance among Iraqi students studying in Europe, and to identify differences in levels of willful ignorance based on gender (male–female) and academic level (undergraduate–postgraduate). The researchers applied a willful ignorance scale developed specifically for this study, consisting of 23 items. The scale was administered to a randomly selected sample of 200 male and female students drawn from the original population. Statistical methods used for data analysis included Pearson’s correlation coefficient and the one-sample t-test. The results revealed that Iraqi students studying in Europe exhibit a notable level of willful ignorance, with statistically significant differences found between male and female students in favor of males. However, no statistically significant differences were observed between undergraduate and postgraduate students in this regard. The study offers several recommendations and suggestions, emphasizing the importance of developing and implementing educational programs that aim to reduce willful ignorance by promoting student motivation and awareness. Also, further research into the nature of deliberate ignorance among other groups, such as international students residing in Iraq and secondary school students, is encouraged. Finally, the study recommends exploring willful ignorance relationships with other variables such as cognitive styles and problem-solving abilities.
