Children Folk Songs (Đồng Dao) in the Present Era: Promoting Cultural Heritage and Education for Sustainable Development (SDGs)

Objective: This study examines the educational role of đồng dao (Vietnamese folk songs) in fostering language skills, moral development, and cultural awareness for children within the context of globalization, aiming to contribute to the goal of sustainable development in education (SDGs). Theoretical Framework: Based on the theory of ethnomusicology and musical anthropology, from the perspective of the function of music, đồng dao is considered an educational tool from the perspective of music’s functional roles, facilitating the holistic development of children. Method: The study analyzed the content of lyrics, structure, rhythm, and creative purpose of Đồng dao and evaluated their application in early childhood education. Results and Discussion: Đồng dao cultivates learning skills, stimulates imagination, and fosters an appreciation for beauty. They impart moral lessons and traditional Vietnamese behavioral norms while conveying insights about the environment through a child’s perspective. Through rhythmic movement games, melodies, and collective activities, the lyrical content of Đồng dao demonstrates their educational impact. Additionally, they encourage children to value their cultural identity, serving as a counterbalance to the influence of Western mass media. Research Implications: Integrating đồng dao into preschool education enhances language proficiency, motor skills, and cultural awareness, enabling children to cherish their national cultural identity. Originality/Value: This paper proposes evaluating đồng dao not merely as folk games but as valuable educational resources that can adapt to the demands of modern education.
