Management of external inflammatory root resorption: A case report

Traumatic dental injuries can lead to external inflammatory root resorption (EIRR), a severe condition threatening tooth survival if untreated. This case report presents the surgical management of EIRR in a 45-year-old male’s maxillary central incisor (#11) resulting from prior trauma. Clinical and radiographic examination confirmed extensive external resorption on the coronal third of the root surface. The treatment plan combined endodontic therapy with surgical intervention. The defect was curetted, treated with trichloroacetic acid, and restored using Biodentine, a bioactive dentine substitute known for its biocompatibility, dentin-like properties, and regenerative potential. Follow-up over twelve months showed complete healing with no recurrence, normal probing depths, and healthy surrounding tissues. This report highlights the importance of early diagnosis and the effectiveness of Biodentine in managing EIRR, reinforcing its role as a reliable material for root resorption repair while preserving the natural tooth and supporting periodontal regeneration.

Abstract

Traumatic dental injuries can lead to external inflammatory root resorption (EIRR), a severe condition threatening tooth survival if untreated. This case report presents the surgical management of EIRR in a 45-year-old male’s maxillary central incisor (#11) resulting from prior trauma. Clinical and radiographic examination confirmed extensive external resorption on the coronal third of the root surface. The treatment plan combined endodontic therapy with surgical intervention.
