Developing new theoretical models for curriculum design that incorporate the multidisciplinary and flexible nature of NEP 2020

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 advocates for a paradigm shift in curriculum design, emphasizing multidisciplinary learning and flexible educational pathways. This paper proposes the development of novel theoretical models to address the complexities inherent in implementing these principles. We review existing curriculum design models and identify their limitations in addressing the needs of a rapidly changing world. These Traditional curriculum models, often linear and discipline-specific, are inadequate for capturing the interconnectedness of knowledge and the diverse learning needs envisioned by NEP 2020. This research explores the theoretical basis of multidisciplinary curriculum integration, drawing from constructivist learning theories, systems thinking, and complexity science. Specifically, it aims to develop a framework that facilitates the design of curricula that foster holistic development, critical thinking, and adaptability. By analyzing the essential principles of NEP 2020, including the emphasis on choice-based credit systems, flexible entry-exit points, and the integration of Indian Knowledge Systems, this paper argues for a dynamic and adaptive curriculum model. We propose the development of “Networked Multidisciplinary Curriculum Model”. This model will incorporate principles of modularity, interconnectedness, and emergent learning, allowing for personalized learning trajectories and the seamless integration of diverse knowledge domains. Ultimately, this theoretical exploration seeks to provide a robust framework for educators and policymakers to translate the aspirational goals of NEP 2020 into actionable curriculum design principles, thereby fostering a more relevant and responsive educational system.
